The Veep was sitting next to his wife Usha Vance when the pair were shown on the Jumbotron with small US flags, leading to some boos, according to footage of the event.
But the US athletes, decked out in red, white and blue and waving American flags were cheered by the crowd as they walked into Milan’s famous San Siro soccer stadium for the Parade of Athletes.
The frosty reception for Vance comes after the head of the International Olympic Committee warned attendees to treat the American athletes and US dignitaries with respect when they are introduced at the start of the international event.
“I hope that the opening ceremony is seen by everyone as an opportunity to be respectful of each other,” IOC President Kirsty Coventry said earlier this week when asked about the possibility of jeering.
The relationship between US and European countries has been fraught under the second Trump administration, including over the president’s persistent eye on acquiring Greenland.
Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala didn’t help to ease tensions when he said earlier this month he didn’t want members of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security in the city to provide security for the Games.
“It’s a militia that signs its own permits to enter people’s house, like we signed our own permission slips at school, except it’s much more serious,” said the mayor, who is a member of a left-wing political party.
“They’re not welcome in Milan. Can’t we just say ‘no’ to Trump for once?”
Vance also met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the Prefettura di Milano, a Milan palace now used as a government building, and watched the opening session of the three-day team figure skating competition with his family and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday.
